Community-centric brewpub, The Driftwood Spars in St Agnes, is hosting its annual Sausage & Ale Weekender over the first bank holiday in May, with music, guest beers, and tasty bangers to fuel the fun.
The event is always planned to coincide with major village celebration St Agnes Bolster Festival – a Cornish festival which features life size puppets, a drum band and a giant effigy of ‘Bolster’, the marauding giant of Cornish folklore whose welcome demise is marked by the festival. The St Agnes Bolster parade – featuring marching drums, dancing, and puppetry – will make its way to the pub for around 1pm on Sunday 5th May, performing for those gathered there. The Crib Shack will be open, selling drinks and ice creams to keep revellers of all ages satiated.
Landlady Louise Treseder said: “The Bolster Festival, coinciding with our Sausage & Ale Weekender, is one of the highlights of the year here in St Agnes. It’s a great blend of genuine Cornish storytelling and a welcome excuse for a good old village knees-up. At The Driftwood, we consider ourselves a (slightly wobbly) pillar of the community, and there’s nowhere better to be on Bolster Weekend with a pint in hand.”
The music line-up kicks off on the Friday night with high energy rock band True Collision and comes to a close on Bank Holiday Monday with renowned local singer songwriter, Joe Francis. On Saturday the Alex Robertson Trio will take to the stage with a soulful acoustic performance, while on Sunday Jeanne Naylor will provide the soundtrack to the afternoon with her genre-defying music, layering rich piano melodies over fingerpick-style guitar. All music performances are free, as is general entry to the pub all weekend.
The Sausage & Ale Weekender also features a guest beer bar, with small batch beers from The Driftwood Spars Brewery and many others carefully chosen from across the UK. Tim Lawrence, Head Brewer at the pub’s microbrewery, said: “We’ve sourced some real cult classics for this one, and frankly we can’t wait to get stuck in ourselves. From Hopadelic from By The Horns Brewing Co. to Session by Seven Bro7hers; Haze Craze by Alphabet Brewing to Baller by Gypsy Hill, there are some absolute bangers to try both in keg and cask.”
Tim has also chosen some beers from closer to home, including Three Spires from Mason Brewing in Threemilestone, and The Last of The Jed-IPA by St Austell Brewery – a limited edition release brewed specially for May 4th, commonly known as Star Wars Day.
Craft cider will also be in plentiful supply for washing down a tasty array of locally made, gluten-free premium sausages; from simple hotdogs to sausage platters and beer-flavoured sausages, they’ll be something for everyone, including vegetarians.
