New Sustainability Coordinator helps Headland achieve prestigious EarthCheck accreditation

The Headland’s commitment to sustainability has been recognised with the award of a prestigious Bronze Benchmark Certification from EarthCheck, the world’s leading scientific benchmarking certification and advisory group for travel and tourism.

The Bronze Status recognises an organisation’s commitment to measure and monitor its sustainability performance. The certification process involves rigorous auditing of energy and water consumption, waste production, supply chain management, and social responsibility. It signifies the hotel is now tracking its environmental footprint using specialised software and accurate data, a crucial step towards fully sustainable operations. EarthCheck Certified is the world’s leading environmental benchmarking and certification program designed specifically for the travel and tourism industry.

The award is a major achievement for the five-star hotel and spa resort’s new full time sustainability coordinator Olivia Giannakoudakis, who joined the business earlier this year.

“We are delighted to have achieved this recognition from EarthCheck and it is a testament to Olivia’s hard work and enthusiasm,” said Veryan Palmer, Family Director. “As a family-run business we are passionate about supporting local communities and protecting this precious part of Cornwall for future generations to enjoy. With Olivia’s assistance we will continue to drive forward a series of ambitious sustainability initiatives which will not only help us to look after our natural heritage but also support the efforts and activities of other people locally,” she added. “We are looking forward to continuing our journey towards EarthCheck Silver Certified and aim to achieve this standard within 12 months.”

As part of her new role, Olivia is responsible for overseeing all The Headland’s sustainability initiatives. Her primary focus is to implement best environmental practices and foster social sustainability, ensuring responsible use of resources.

“The challenge of transforming human perspectives within a people focused business was what initially drew me to the role,” said Olivia. “I was inspired by the consideration of sustainable practices within a popular business with strong heritage in Cornwall. The power to make direct impact to benefit the local community and the environment is something that I am passionate about,” she added.

Olivia brings a wealth of experience in science, health and wellbeing, and environmental consultancy to her new role. With a BSc in Biology and an MSc in Environmental Management, she has previously worked as an ecological consultant and project lead, ensuring business decisions meet legal sustainability requirements. Her background also includes engaging with local communities in environmental initiatives and data collection. Olivia’s appointment and the EarthCheck certification open new opportunities to work with eco-conscious suppliers and organisations, aiming to protect both environmental and human health. Her efforts will also ensure that The Headland continues to support local conservation projects and initiatives, reinforcing its commitment to keeping business local.
