Paws and Claus: Festive quiz night at Weymouth Bar & Restaurant

A barking good time is in store for the patrons of The Onyx Bar & Restaurant, at The Crown Hotel Weymouth, on Thursday 12th December, when they host a very special festive quiz night in aid of the local charity ‘Staffie & Stray Rescue’. The Bournemouth-based charity works tirelessly to rescue and rehome Staffordshire Bull Terriers and other abandoned dogs of all breeds.

The Onyx Bar & Restaurant, part of the Kings Hotels Group in Weymouth, is a dog-friendly restaurant and bar in what was previously The Crown Hotel’s Vaults Bar.

Fiona King, Director, tells us more: “We are all a bunch of dog lovers at Kings Hotels and I have given two amazing Staffies their forever homes from ‘Staffie & Stray Rescue’. We wanted to help support the charity and came up with the idea of turning one of The Onyx Bar & Restaurant’s legendary quiz nights over to the charity and raising some funds for them.”

The festive quiz in aid of ‘Staffie & Stray Rescue’ takes place on Thursday 12th December from 7.30 pm. Tickets include a free Christmas Cocktail. All monies raised on the night through ticket sales, donations and raffle will go directly to the charity. The star prize for the raffle is a luxurious overnight stay in the Hotel Rex’s Superior Suite, complete with a three-course dinner and full English breakfast. Plus, there are lots of other prizes, including carvery meals at Onyx Bar & Restaurant.

Sophie from Staffie & Stray Rescue explains why the charity is so important: “There are over 10.6 million* dogs in the UK as of 2024, that’s roughly about 28% of UK Adults owns a dog. Sadly, we have seen a significant rise in the number of Staffies and strays being brought to us, partly due to the cost-of-living crisis and people not being able to look after the dogs they bought during COVID-19. We have rehomed and fostered over 839 dogs since the charity launched in 2014. But as many of your readers will know, the cost of everything has gone through the roof. We really appreciate that the team at Onyx Bar & Restaurant thought of us as the charity to help this Christmas. We will be there on the night, and we may have a few of our four-legged friends from the centre with us.”

Tickets can be purchased from Onyx Bar & Restaurant or the receptions of The Crown or Hotel Rex. If you would like to make a donation for the Christmas DOGGIE Hamper, they are making for ‘Staffie & Stray Rescue’ you can leave your donation at Onyx Bar & Restaurant, The Crown or Hotel Rex. All monies raised on the night will go directly to the charity.

The Onyx Bar & Restaurant, part of the Kings Hotel Group, is located within The Crown Hotel on St Thomas Street, Weymouth. Open daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., it serves food from noon until 8:30 p.m. The Kings Hotel Group, a locally owned and family-run business, is led by mother and daughter duo Lynne and Fiona King. Over the years, the group has not only provided exceptional lodging but has also been a cornerstone of the Weymouth community, serving as a vibrant social and commercial hub for both locals and visitors alike.
