Boddington’s Preserves, a family-run business based in Cornwall, recently embarked on an exciting trade mission to Japan, aiming to significantly expand its presence in the East Asian market. This strategic trip, supported by the Department for Business and Trade (DBT), saw the team showcase their popular preserves in Tokyo and Osaka.
The DBT frequently organises and supports trade missions like this to help UK businesses explore new export opportunities and connect with international buyers. These missions provide invaluable platforms for companies to gain insights into foreign markets, understand local consumer preferences, and establish crucial business relationships. For Boddington’s Preserves, the collaboration with the DBT was instrumental in facilitating their “Cornwall to Japan” journey.
During their visit, Boddington’s proudly presented their Chilli Jam and Red Onion Relish at the Festival of Flavours. This marked the first introduction of these unique Cornish tastes to many Japanese attendees, signalling a promising entry into a new market. A key aspect of the trip involved “Meet the Buyer” sessions, where representatives from Boddington’s engaged in high-paced, productive meetings with Japanese importers and retailers, opening doors to exciting new collaborations.
Beyond the business engagements, the team also immersed themselves in Japanese culture. Highlights included participating in a traditional matcha tea ceremony alongside friends from Cornish Tea and exploring Tokyo with an existing customer. This cultural exchange provided a deeper understanding of Japanese lifestyle and consumer habits, offering valuable insights into how Boddington’s products could integrate into Japan’s vibrant food scene – building on the inspiration, connections, and insights gained from their successful trip to Japan.
This trade mission represents a significant milestone for the fourth-generation family business. Returning energised and full of ideas, Will Boddington says: “We’re incredibly grateful to the Department for Business and Trade for making this possible — and we’re excited to see where this new international chapter leads next.”
