Broad Campden’s charming The Bakers Arms recently revved up its reputation, transforming its car park into a spectacular display of automotive history and modern marvels. Over 30 classic and super cars, ranging from a venerable 100-year-old Austin to a sleek McLaren F1, descended upon the Grade II listed pub, much to the delight of patrons and enthusiasts alike.
The impressive collection featured a diverse array of iconic vehicles, including a series of Bentleys, classic MGs, powerful Ferraris, precision-engineered Porsches, and charming vintage Citroën 2CVs. These magnificent machines belong partly to Richard Smith, who co-owns the pub, and partly to a specialist group of car enthusiasts renowned for touring their prized vehicles across the UK’s picturesque countryside.
George Gabb, the pub manager, captured the excitement, stating, “We looked like a showroom with beer on tap; horsepower is the new happy hour.” He further revealed that the event was pre-arranged with Richard Smith and featured a “spectacular BBQ” prepared by chef Ethan. The success of the gathering has sparked interest in making such events a regular fixture at the pub, catering to a wider audience than just the “unofficial Goodwood” attendees, a playful nod to the famous Goodwood Festival of Speed which celebrates motoring heritage. While Goodwood is a major, official event, the comparison highlights the quality and scope of the cars present at The Bakers Arms.
The Bakers Arms, a 19th-century inn that was formerly a Flowers Brewery pub, reopened in late 2024 after being closed since early 2024 following the retirement of its previous landlords. Villagers and neighbours Richard and Gail Smith purchased the historic establishment and have since embarked on an ambitious project to restore it to its former glory. This includes extensive upgrades such as a new patio, refreshed bar and dining areas, and a brand-new kitchen.
The revitalised pub is now leased to and managed through a joint venture between the Smiths and Cotswold caterers The Relish Group, alongside well-known Campden residents Stephen and Charlotte Gabb. This collaborative effort underscores a commitment to making The Bakers Arms a vibrant hub for both locals and visitors, and events like the recent classic car display are certainly driving that vision forward.
