Charles Martell launches Stinking Bishop Mini

Gloucestershire-based cheesemaker and distiller, Charles Martell & Son has launched a miniature version of its iconic Stinking Bishop, a soft washed-rind cow’s milk cheese, which has been in production since 1994. The individually wrapped 250g wheels have been designed with gifting, celebrations and entertaining in mind, to help reduce waste and give people more opportunity to enjoy Britain’s first ever washed rind cheese.

Made with full fat pasteurised cow’s milk and non-animal rennet, Stinking Bishop is washed in Charles Martell’s own perry, produced using pears grown on the Dymock-based farm. Named after a native pear, grown close to the farm, Stinking Bishop has a delicate and almost nutty flavour, making it the perfect gift for any cheese lover.

Living up to its name with a pungent aroma and oozing texture, Stinking Bishop has won admirers as diverse as the Royal Household, with the business honoured with a Royal Warrant in 2007 by the Prince of Wales, which was awarded again by King Charles III in 2024, and claymation comedy character Wallace, when Stinking Bishop featured in Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit in 2005.

Whether shared with loved ones around the celebration table or packed into a picnic hamper for some on-the-go feasting, Stinking Bishop mini cheese offers a new way for people to enjoy this living piece of Britain’s food heritage.

Stinking Bishop mini cheeses (250g) are available to purchase from independent cheese retailers across the UK, including www.pongcheese.co.uk .
