Burts Snacks launches eco-friendly crisp packaging

Award-winning Devon snack maker, Burts Snacks, is unveiling its most environmentally friendly crisp packaging yet. Made with 55% recycled plastic, the new packs will be rolling out across a range of its most popular flavours this summer.

The new packs, which use post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic, will begin appearing on shelves across the South West and beyond from June 2025. Local favourites such as Devon Roast Beef, Mature Cheddar & Onion (made with cheese from Quicke’s in Exeter), and Sea Salt & Malt Vinegar will be among the first to feature the eco-conscious design, available in both 40g and 150g sizes. A green flash on the new packs will make it easy for fans to identify the sustainability upgrade.

This move from Burts marks a first in achieving the highest level of PCR plastic used among the UK’s hand-cooked crisp brands. This change alone is projected to save around 8,000 tonnes of virgin plastic and forms part of the company’s wider drive to reduce environmental impact while supporting local suppliers.

Commenting on the new packaging, Rikin Lakhani, Managing Director, Burts Snacks & Europe Snacks said: “Over the past few years, we’ve carefully considered the different ways we can move to a more environmentally friendly packaging while keeping the same high-quality hand-cooked chips our customers know and love. The new PCR packaging will take used materials and incorporate it into new plastic, helping to create a circular economy and a happier environment. We know we have a way to go in terms of sustainability, but we’ve made some real strides recently and are constantly looking at how we can do better.”

The transition to PCR packaging follows several other sustainability improvements from Burts over recent years. These include reducing plastic film thickness, cutting cardboard use by 10%, and working with local South West suppliers such as South Devon Chilli Farm and Eversfield Organic to keep food miles low and support regional producers.

As consumer awareness around environmental impact continues to rise, Burts’ changes reflect the growing demand for greener choices and demonstrate the brand’s ongoing commitment to both its Devon roots and the future of the planet.
