Arkell’s Brewery is proud to announce that Liam King, apprentice chef at The Priory Inn, Tetbury, has successfully completed his Level 2 Commis Chef End-Point Assessment, achieving an overall Pass with a Distinction in the practical cooking element.
Liam first joined The Priory in 2022, working in the wash-up area, and soon showed the enthusiasm that led him into a full apprenticeship. He trained four days a week in the pub kitchen and one day a week at New College Swindon. Guided by Manager and Head Chef Matt Starkey, who brings thirty plus years of experience to the role, Liam has developed steadily in a venue known for its excellent food, warm welcome and strong hospitality values; an ideal environment for a young chef to grow.
Liam’s assessment showcased his strong technical ability, safe working practices and excellent understanding of kitchen standards. His practical exam included breaking down a whole chicken with care and precision, preparing a flavour-packed satay starter, and delivering a well-balanced main course featuring expertly cooked chicken, potatoes, and spinach. Assessors praised Liam’s seasoning, presentation, portion consistency and ability to work efficiently within the assessment timeframe.
In the professional discussion element of the assessment, Liam demonstrated sound knowledge of preparation and cooking methods, safe use of kitchen technology, and a clear understanding of workplace procedures and customer needs.
Natalie Starkey, Manager of The Priory Inn, said: “We’re so very proud of Liam. His hard work, growth and professionalism in the kitchen have been clear to everyone here. Apprenticeships give young people a real opportunity to learn on the job, build confidence and become valuable members of the team, and Liam is a brilliant example of that.”
To recognise Liam’s achievement, George Arkell, Managing Director of Arkell’s Brewery presented him with a certificate and a professional chef’s knife.
George Arkell, commented: “Apprenticeships are vital to the future of hospitality, and encouraging young talent is something we really believe in at Arkell’s. Liam’s achievement reflects the importance of nurturing skills in our pubs and supporting the next generation of chefs and hospitality professionals. We’re delighted to celebrate his success.”
