Roly’s Fudge relocates its oldest fudge pantry and announces new ownership in Barnstaple

Roly’s Fudge has announced new ownership of its oldest pantry in Barnstaple, which has relocated from its long-standing location in the Barnstaple Pannier Market to new premises at 11 Holland Walk. Taking the lead are brother and sister duo, Stuart Allsworth and Victoria Gove, who also own the Ilfracombe pantry.

Stuart Allsworth, new owner of Roly’s Fudge Barnstaple, says: “It’s quite an honour to be taking over the reins of the oldest original shop. We are really pleased with the space we have in the new shop and look forward to welcoming in old and new customers.”

Dannee McGuire, Director at Roly’s Fudge, adds: “The Barnstaple pantry is iconic in the Roly’s Fudge journey. With the previous franchisee retiring, we are very happy to see the shop continuing its legacy. Stuart and Victoria’s parents were our very first franchisees, launching the Ilfracombe pantry thirty years ago in 1996. It is a privilege to have this shop remain with a North Devon family that shares such a deep connection to our history.”

The Roly’s Fudge Pantry in Barnstaple holds a unique place in the company’s history, having first opened its doors in 1989, it stands as the oldest original shop and one of the very first pantries ever established.

The new location is conveniently situated just off the High Street in Barnstaple, heading towards the cattle market car park. During the move from the Pannier Market, several historic elements were preserved and brought to the new site. Among these is the iconic ‘Original Roly’s man,’ who spent many years greeting customers outside the former location, while the original shop counter has been thoughtfully repurposed as a packing station. The move also included the historic copper pan, the very same pan used when Roly’s demonstrated fudge-making at Harrods.

Each batch of Roly’s Fudge is crafted using traditional techniques that take two hours to complete. Producing only 100 portions with every small batch ensures that the pieces of fudge deliver the signature rich, melt-in-your-mouth texture for which the brand is celebrated.

Founded in 1987, Roly’s Fudge is a family-run business specialising in traditional, handmade fudge crafted using a classic West Country recipe. Made fresh daily in small batches using natural ingredients and zero food waste, Roly’s distinctive crumbly fudge is created in full view of customers in more than 40 fudge pantries across the country. With a wide range of flavours and seasonal specials, Roly’s Fudge has become a favourite with both locals and visitors alike.
