Leading holiday home company Cornish Gems presents environmental charity Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) with a donation of £3326 – as two Cornish organisations collaborate to help protect Cornwall’s natural environment.
Cornish Gems, who offer a portfolio of over 200 holiday properties in Cornwall, chose SAS as their 2021 Gems Charity of the Year – pledging their support to fundraise and drive awareness of the charities’ essential environmental and conservation work.
United by a shared passion to protect and preserve Cornwall’s striking coastline and the sea, the collaboration encouraged local people and visitors alike to play their part – boosting awareness of the importance of coastal responsibility, going plastic free and SAS’s Safer Seas (mobile application) Service – which offers real-time water quality and beach safety information, providing a valuable resource for on-the-go coastal adventures.
The donation from Cornish Gems, will directly support SAS campaign for clean water, an end to plastic pollution, action on climate change and conservation education in schools.
Emma Fashokun, Cornish Gems Guest Experience and CSR Manager, says: “We’re so proud to have worked with Surfers Against Sewage and really respect their brilliant and vital work. Sustainability is central to our business, so it’s been hugely rewarding – and felt like a natural meeting of hearts and minds to join forces with SAS to help raise funds and awareness to support likeminded campaigns.”
The Gems Charity of the Year initiative began in 2018 and has so far raised over £17,500 for worthy causes, with donations being shared with the Cornwall Wildlife Trust, the Cornwall Air Ambulance, the RNLI – and now Surfers Against Sewage.
Emma Cowley, SAS Corporate Partnerships Officer, says: “We’re so grateful for the support from Cornish Gems, who chose Surfers Against Sewage as their charity of the year for 2021. Not only did Cornish Gems fundraise throughout the year, but they also got involved in various aspects of our work, including running their own beach cleans and promoting our Safer Seas & Rivers Service App for real-time water quality reporting. Their generous donation will really help us in our work for 2022, funding our projects, education programme, beach cleans and campaigns to protect the marine environment, especially from the current plastic pollution crisis.”
