Cornwall’s HERD restaurant, which opened less than a year ago, is a finalist in the 10th annual National Burger Awards and is set to compete against leading industry heavyweights from across the hospitality industry.
Just sixteen burgers, from across the UK, including the HERD Burger have made the final of this year’s highly anticipated National Burger Awards – which will take place in London on February 20th at Big Penny Social, hosted by DJ BBQ.
The national competition, celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, will see chef’s from across the hospitality sector – including restaurants, pubs, and street food traders – go head-to-head in a live cooking showdown, to see whose signature burger is named the best in the UK.
In addition, the competing chefs will also participate in a technical challenge that will see them create a burger from a specific selection of ingredients supplied by event sponsors in a bid to be crowned Burger Chef of the Year. And take part in a plant based round too.
The HERD Burger is a thing of beauty. Sandwiching a 150g grass fed dry-aged beef patty, double cheese, melted onions, gherkins, and homemade beer mayonnaise (created using Sharp’s Brewery Atlantic IPA) in a custom Baker Tom white bread bun.
The Cornish contender is up against some of the biggest names in hospitality: London-based burger chain and 2020 champion Bleecker, Black Bear Burger, Loungers, owner of the Lounge, Cosy Club and Brightside brands, as well as Mollie’s Motel & Diner – created by Soho House founder Nick Jones MBE – and Stonegate, the nation’s largest pub and bar operator.
Independently owned HERD in Newquay, which only launched last summer, has quickly became one of Cornwall’s hottest new openings. The wildly popular restaurant offers a seriously tasty menu of proper cheeseburgers, fries, milkshakes, and soft serve ice-cream teamed with sleek interiors, an enviable playlist, and a friendly team of food obsessives.
Specialising in next-level burgers that are big on flavour and simplicity, HERD makes burgers from scratch using top quality ingredients. We’re talking bespoke bread buns, native beef patties, from third generation family butchers Aubrey Allen, and a host of Herd’s homemade secret sauces, dips, and (somewhat lifechanging!) gravy made from braised beef brisket cooking juices.
Tom O’Brien, HERD’s operations manager, says: “We’re stoked to be in the final of such a renowned industry competition – this is the Oscar’s of the burger world! Having not yet been open a year, it’s a milestone moment for us to be up against industry heavy weights, and to be representing Cornwall on a national level. We’re a lesser known up-and-comer in this established crowd – but we’re super confident our HERD burger can deliver the goods to impress the judges!”
HERD’s open 7 days a week from 12noon – 10pm to eat in or take-away, and available for delivery via Just Eat. To follow their journey at the National Burger Awards, to order online or for more information please visit: www.herdburger.co.uk or follow @herd.burger on Instagram.
