Origin Coffee sets sail to reduce carbon emissions by over 90%

Leading B Corp speciality coffee roasters, Origin Coffee, has announced a long-term partnership with Belco and TOWT to deliver a brand new product from Brazil to Cornwall across the Atlantic Ocean on a sailboat – Sail Ship Coffee.

The alternative method of delivery will reduce transport emissions by up to 95%* in comparison to an average cargo ship, saving Origin Coffee up to 3.9tco2e per container, as well as reducing noise pollution that affects marine life. 19 tonnes of Brazilian coffee will travel for 22 days to Le Havre in France before arriving at the Cornish headquarters in Porthleven.

Origin’s Sail Ship Coffee has been produced, harvested, and dried at altitude in the special region of Morgiana by brothers Fernando and Felipe Menzes Riberi. It will be available to buy online from early 2025, and through selected wholesale customers including The Pig Hotel Group. Tasting notes showcase the unique terroir of the region including milk chocolate, Brazil nut, and raisin, making it naturally sweet. The beans will be bagged in fully recyclable packaging, as all Origin Coffee is as standard since a conscious packaging switch in 2023 which has already seen up to 47% reduction in co2e compared to compostable bags.

Sustainability Manager Sarah Walker, comments: “This is a monumental step for Origin and our environmental commitments. As part of our wider Net Zero plan, we plan to increase our sail quantities by a % year on year and for this alternative, kinder, method of transportation to represent 10% of our overall coffee by 2030. Doing this will allow us to offer our customers high-quality, consciously-sourced coffee with a lower environmental impact.”

Origin Coffee proudly celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, marking its status as one of the longest-standing coffee roasters in the UK. With five consecutive years as a certified B Corp, Origin remains a leader in the industry, setting the standard for strengthening direct farmer relationships, delivering best-in-class B2B practices, and educating consumers in the craft of specialty coffee.

*Maritime transport is a significant contributor to global pollution. Its emissions account for around 3% of global CO2 emissions and a staggering 20% of worldwide sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide, source: Ademe & European Environment Agency EEA.
Sail cargo achieves up to a 95% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to average container carriers. Diesel container carriers emit up to 33.1 gCO2/t.km, while sail cargo emits only 1 gCO2e/t.km. This means, our sail ship coffee will produce up to 3.9 tonnes less CO2 emissions per container than average sea freight. Source: Fourth Greenhouse Gas Study 2020
